N900-Browser-portrait-modeIf you are one of those N900ers who are praying day in and day out for portrait mode on your N900, I have some good news for you. Contrary to earlier attempts, you don’t need a bug to enable the portrait mode on your N900, but just a soft touch of a short-cut key(s) to enable portrait mode on your N900 browser. Yeah you read it right, it’s built-in and just wasn’t known to the N900 community as such. Thanks to MaemoCommunity for digging this out of nowhere, but seriously Nokia: Why did you leave such an important function out of the official changelog of PR 1.1? Yeah, the new firmware unlocked this feature on the N900 browser.

Needless to say, the advantages of portrait mode for one-handed operation are innumerable. Now only if all the applications were to function in portrait mode, would the N900 community breathe a sigh of relief but having got the best feature of N900 working in the portrait mode is a big consolation for ardent N900 fans. So guys before I spill the beans on short-cut key(s) that enable portrait mode on microB on N900, take a look at this demo video below, after the break though.

So now you know the magic keys are: Ctrl + Shift + O

Here’s another demo video from the folks at The Nokia Blog:

Unfortunately, there is no onscreen landscape keyboard yet and hopefully Nokia will fix this with a firmware update soon.

Which all apps have been affected by the current update? For me only the browser seems to be running in portrait mode and that too with the keyboard in..!

Presently only the browser is working in portrait mode and as of now it looks like Nokia is trying to include this mode within the Maemo OS. As of third party applications, Pyrecipe works in portrait mode. Let’s hope more third party developers include this mode in their apps in the coming days..

i havnt try yet the portrait mode in browser, but i’m looking forward to all feature of auto-rotate / portrait mode. i know sooner,,, nokia will fix this.

It won’t be easy. All those widgets and icons on desktop, freely located… how are they going to make them look good in both modes? How is user going to adjust both portrait and landscape modes? Not very easy task at all. Making things freely adjustable is excellent, but… the price may be too high. :)

i have tried on my n900 but it is not working…
