Battle of Browsers-Part II

browser-wars You may be wondering what’s all the big deal about mobile browsers, but let me tell you that the mobile browser is one of the most important part of a smartphone. For one, the very concept of having a smartphone is to be in touch with the world and we need to access the web for that and that comes by via a browser. The hardware limitations imposed by the form factor of a smartphone  is another roadblock in accessing web pages on smartphones which now come in screen sizes ranging 3″-4″ . Add 3G and Wi-Fi data reception hiccups to that and you know how  many hurdles there are in bringing web browsing to the mobile platforms. But developers worldwide have been working on this for long and I must say they have come a long way for we can now access almost every feature available on a desktop browser on the Maemo browser on N900. But I also wanted to know how it measures up to the competition and hence the test and today I will give my verdict.

We did see some blood on the battle field yesterday  and am now pitching them in a YouTube  round to find out which browser packs the  strongest punch. Which browser would you bet on? Safari? Maemo? Android?. I am afraid you will have to hit on the read button to see if you got it right? Read the rest of this entry »

mugged In case you were wondering where I disappeared after promising some hands on experience of N900, I can only say that people are really getting restless to get their hands on a N900. I almost got mugged walking around the city, toying around with N900. These are the desperate times and no am not talking about the economic recession or the recent market crunch in Dubai but am referring to the severe market shortage of Nokia N900s.

Not to mention the canceling of pre-0rders from Amazon, Dell, NewEgg and other online dealers, N900 enthusiasts are just losing their patience and I got some first hand experience of the same when I was mobbed this weekend, after being spotted with N900. However, I put up a brave fight and managed to keep the N900 with me but only after letting my attackers have some hands-on feel of the device. Yeah, I was just kidding about being mugged, my attackers just wanted some first hand experience of the device. I was traveling on work over the weekend and hence was not able to update the blog here. Anyway having missed out on the black Friday, I realised that a lot of N900 buzz has been doing the rounds, which by now you should have already read. So, I thought I will cover something which no other N900 blog has touched upon so far- Data backup and Recovery on N900. Read the rest of this entry »

n900Who says you gotta be a music artist to perform gigs? The latest gadget to hit the town, the Nokia N900 is nothing short of a rockstar when it comes to its entertainment capabilities, and guess what, it has a couple of  gigs of its own! Music and Video capabilities aside, the TV out port of this wonder gadget is being maxed out by the handful of reviewers, who have been fortunate enough to get their hands on a preview set.

With gaming on phones becoming the latest fad, the N900 is taking mobile gaming to places where we dare say there is no competition at this juncture of time. Obviously we are referring to N900 gaming on humongous LCD panels that takes the centerstage in your living rooms. Check out the sample videos (or gigs!) after the break. Rumor: "N900 GUI interface non-customizable?"

Posted on : 20-10-2009 | By : rodney | In : Nokia N900 Rumors

n900-rumorsRumor has it that the highly hyped Nokia N900 phone will not allow mobile carriers to customize the handset’s user interface. This will not permit mobile operators worldwide to tailor the graphical user interface (GUI) of the N900 handset according to their needs and specifications.

This is NOT true.
Maemo’s GUI can be customized.

Nokia denies any intent of locking the customization capabilities of the Maemo software. In fact, the Maemo operating system welcomes the idea of harnessing the power and the uniqueness of the N900 to satisfy the appetite of the consumers, application makers and communication carriers.

What will be the advantage for the mobile carriers? For one, they can modify the look and feel of the graphical user interface according to their color scheme and put their patented logos, icons and familiar markings. They can even install proprietary software that enables their customers to download ringtones, wallpapers, mms picture messages and the like. The possibilities are endless.

This news gives a sigh of relief to those who have been praying that the Maemo platform will not be as limited or locked as the iPhone operating system.

However, more questions pop-up.

Will this open platform also open a door for malicious use? Can Maemo be opening its doors to scoundrels who will take advantage of the Maemo’s architecture for cruel purposes?

How will this affect the end consumer? Perhaps it will not be much unless the customers complain of their carrier’s version of the N900 user interface. However, this still remains to be seen since the phone is practically a mystery to most of the world. And will the customers of these mobile carriers accept or complain about their custom-made interfaces or will they prefer the original Nokkia N900 look-and-feel?

The answer to these questions will emerge soon. And you will be able to read them all here at the Nokia N900 blog.
