twitter-logoBeing a Twitter addict, a powerful twitter client is a must have for me, be it on my desktop/notebook or my smartphone. Being an iPhone user, I am more than amazed by the capabilities of Twitter apps like Tweetdeck and Twitterific and was expecting some app with similar capabilities on the N900.

Earlier, I talked about Hahlo4, a web based app which offers a ton of features directly from the browser, any browser, including the one you are reading this post from. However, back then I didn’t have a N900 at my disposal and it was no first hand experience. Now am armed with an N900 and wasting no time, I pitch Hahlo and Mauku, a micro-blogging app available in the default Maemo repository for a Twitter showdown. Let’s see who takes the crown of the best twitter app on N900, after the break though. Read the rest of this entry »

Configuring Email on N900- A Walk in the Park

Ovi mail-1One of the most important things you expect your smartphone to be capable of doing is to function as an efficient email client for you. While BlackBerry’s Push E-mail is the market leader in providing email-on-the-go services, competing smartphones are not lagging far behind with their email clients either. The only faux being the absence of a true push email services from any of the competitors. While Nokia does have its Nokia Messaging service, its not as widely available as the BlackBerry’s.

Coming to N900, I was delighted to see how easy it was to configure an email account on Maemo 5’s default email client. Very much like the email setup on iPhone, you don’t have to bother about SMTP/POP server names if you are syncing one of the popular email services like that of Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail, Ovi mail etc. Infact its so simple, I wish my outlook functioned in a similar fashion. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the screenshots that I took as I configured the ovi mail account, after the break though. Read the rest of this entry »

For users of symbian phones, Ovi Maps needs no introduction for Ovi Maps has been the default navigaiton app on symbian smartphone for over a year now (It was called Nokia maps initially and then rechristened to Ovi Maps). It was one of the first navigation apps to come up with the concept of downloadable  maps on phones, drastically reducing the data consumption on compatible phones. The navigation app has been a great success on the symbian platform, and now debuts on the Maemo platform with the N900. Let’s now see how it pans out for my routine navigation needs. The Nokia N900 is dubbed as “RAW COMPUTER POWER” with the description – “Experience the speed and raw power of the high-performance Nokia N900 mobile computer.” From the photos seen below, it seems that this latest offering from Finnish company Nokia will be taken seriously.

n900-default01Check out the slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. This is the N900’s answer to existing Blackberry and similar slide phones that give the user a complete feel of a full keyboard. Although this isn’t new in the market, this is just one reason why you should be getting this phone by the end of the month.

n900-default02

The N900 boasts of a 3.5 inch wide screen touch display with 800 x 480 pixel  resolution. This feature is carried over from one of the company’s first touch screen offerings – the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone.

n900-default03In portrait mode, the N900 is glossy and displays information clearly.

n900-default04Carry your music with the N900. Sporting a new album display, you can enjoy your tracks complete with the Nokia Stereo Headset (WH-205) which comes with the unit. Sweet!

n900-default05Slide that cover and you’ve got yourself a 5-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss optics Tessar lens with a CMOS sensor. Take a photo with a Dual LED flash for those low-light photo opportunities.

n900-default06The Nokia 5800 had a separate stand, which came with the unit. Apparently, the N900 already comes with a stand built right in the phone’s body that you can just take out any time you like. No need to carry anything around to enjoy your music or watch your video.

The Nokia N900 is temptingly good to look at in these pictures. The unit should be released to the public around October 19, 2009 throughout Europe. Release dates for Asia and other continents are to be announced. The level of anticipation is rising and the internet cannot wait to have their hands on this latest leap of technology.

Tune in to the Nokia N900 blog for more news.
