Are you wondering where is all that battery juice of your N900 disappearing? If you have to plugin your N900 after like every 6-7 hours, then let me tell you that you are bitten by one of the software bugs either of one of those applications you recently downloaded or those in Maemo 5 itself!
A number of users have been complaining about less than average battery performance on their N900 and was wondering what was all the hype about, when I was able to get about average battery performance from my trial unit of N900 from WOM World. So I headed straight to the abode of Maemo 5: Maemo.org and the N900 forum there infact had all the answers to my queries.
Before I dwell into the battery tweaks of N900, let me add a few spoilers here so that you can skip the read, if you have already made these tweaks on your N900. Tweaks related to Wi-Fi settings and disabling some of the data intensive widgets on the homescreen. If you haven’t, then hit on the read button to know more about these tweaks. A lot has been talked about the browser capabilities of the Maemo browser on N900 and that of its closest rival, Safari on the iPhone. Being an iPhone user myself, I gotta say that it accounts for one of the smoothest mobile browsing experiences, but the N900 browser’s capability to render the pages in desktop like resolution takes the competition to the next level, all by itself.
To zero in on a winner, I put them through several tests and threw in HTC Hero, which according to me is the best Android phone in market (as of now) and HTC G1, the legendary Google phone which gave the world the first feel of Android. Eager to know who is the winner? Hit on the read button to find out. Read the rest of this entry »
More the time I spend with N900, the more am amazed by its capabilities for it just blows me away each time I explore the device. After playing around with the onboard backup and restore function, I was in mood for some fun today and subjected the N900 to media compatibility test and guess what N900 comes out with flying colours.
I threw at N900, some of the most popular media file formats and each time it amazed me with the video and audio quality that was rendered from the onboard media player. I didn’t any of the files whatsoever either to set the resolution right or fiddle with the file formats. What all formats do you think you can dig with the N900? Hit the jump button to find out. Now that N900 has started shipping, I thought it was time to start scouting the web for N900 apps, so that I know exactly what to do when my device arrives at my doorstep (which am hoping is pretty soon!)
From my previous experiences with a Nokia device, I headed straight to the ovi store (the mecca of apps for Nokia devices) to see if I can find any apps for the N900 but to my utter disappointment the Maemo version of the store is not yet live, so there goes the best source for apps. Then, I turned to the omniscient, the GOOGLE and guess what I discovered? Just the apps I was looking for! Details and short video after the break. Read the rest of this entry »

The N900 is not yet launched and its already taking the center-stage of a high octane drama. First came the pre-orders by Nokia and Amazon, which were promptly followed by unforeseen delays, and then Newegg came up with a definite shipping date for the device, attracting hordes of fans for the pre-order. Joining the bandwagon are the web’s largest retailers- Dell and Amazon, which may not have a definite shipping date at their disposal but their pricing is something you don’t wanna miss out on.
As of this very moment, Dell Smart Business is retailing the N900 at USD 519 and that includes shipping, which we gotta say is the sweetest deal we can expect from any retailer for a genuine N900. The deal was infact sweeter a couple of hours ago, when Dell stopped accepting the 15% discount on coupon code “9PD$33PJFL5P21″ . That made the retail price for N900 USD 442! (We gotta screenshot to prove) As one might expect, the avalanche of N900 fans pre-booking the N900 under this offer, forced Dell to terminate the offer in a little over 3-4 hours after the word got out.
